Protect Your Health: Signs You Need To See A Neurologist

Posted on: 11 April 2022

If you're like most people, you know when you need to visit your primary care physician. However, you might not know when you need to see a specialist, such as a neurologist. Neurological symptoms aren't always easy to identify. Unfortunately, delays in symptom recognition can also delay treatment time. That's why it's important for you to know what neurological symptoms to watch for. Read the list provided below. If you experience any of the symptoms described below, schedule an appointment with a neurologist right away.

You Feel Numbness and Tingling

It's not uncommon for your extremities to fall asleep from time to time. When that happens, you'll experience some numbness and tingling, until the blood starts flowing properly. However, if you experience numbness and tingling on a constant basis, or the symptoms have come on quickly, you need to take the situation seriously. This type of numbness and tingling could be symptoms of a serious medical condition. Some of those medical conditions include multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and carpal tunnel syndrome.

You Have Speech Impairment

If you're dealing with a recent speech impairment, there's a chance that the problem is related to a neurological disorder. Speech impairments can include slurred speech, use of unrecognizable words, or word substitution. There are several neurological causes of speech impairment. Some of those causes include brain trauma, apraxia, and dementia. If you're finding it difficult to speak clearly, or you struggle to find the right words during a conversation, it's time to schedule an appointment with a neurologist.

You Experience Chronic Pain

If you experience skin pain on a regular basis, and any type of contact causes increased pain, you could be suffering from a neurological disorder. Allodynia is one type of neuropathic pain disorder. Unfortunately, neuropathic pain disorders can cause pain with even the slightest touch, which can interfere with your everyday life. Luckily, treatment options are available.

You Suspect a Stroke

If you've been dealing with unusual health symptoms, and you suspect that you've had a stroke, you need to speak with a neurologist right away. You might think that a stroke would immediately lead to hospitalization, but that's not necessarily the case. You can actually have a mild stroke and not know it, especially if you don't know what symptoms to watch for. If you've experienced facial numbness, sudden confusion, or sudden vision problems in one or both eyes, contact a neurologist right away. You might have suffered a silent stroke.
